Not so long ago, the Monterey Peninsula Country Club had its stationery and its golf shirts and golf hats,

I’ve taken to padding around in the middle of the night. The joints and muscles nag. The parts are wearing thin in places and sagging in others.

The road forked. I had a choice.

I had plucked the peony’s fluorescence
